We studied 45 cases of percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage in the patients with obstructive jaundice for the past 3 years from March 1987 to February 1990 in the Department of Surgery of Eul Ji general hospital.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1) The ratio of male and female was 1.1 ; 1(24 cases : 21 case). The mean age was 60 years(Range 31-81).
2) The causes of benign obstructive jaundice were biliary stones in 15 cases. The malignant causes were distal common bile duct cancer in 15 cases, Klatskin tumor in 6 cases, duodenal cancer in 5 cases, pancreatic head cancer in 2 cases.

cancer in 2 cases.
3) The preoperative biliary decompression was performed 2 cases, palliative PTBD was performed 23 cases.
4) The liver function test after palliative PTBD were as followed. The serum bilirubin levels decreased from average of 10.9 mg/dl to 6.4 mg/dl, SGOT, 92.5 Iu to 40.5 Iu, SGPT, 113.6 Iu to 30.7 Iu, and Alkaline phosphatase 344.1 U/L to 160.7
U/L.
5) The complications of PTBD were cholangitis in 2 cases, leakage around the catheter in 4 cases electrolyte imbalance in 4 cases, bile peritonitis in 1 case.
